‘Narcos’ Season 2 Trailer and Wagner Moura Confirm Pablo Escobar Is 'Going To Die This Season'

Everyone knows Pablo Escobar died. It’s history. But what happens when you have a hit television show that needs to be dragged out for a few more seasons? Common sense says spread the narrative out. But that’s not how Netflix is doing things apparently.

The streaming service turned television studio recently debuted a teaser trailer for the second season of Narcos, Netflix’s hit drama-with-a-splash-of-documentary series on Escobar and the Colombian cartels. The Season 2 trailer confirmed a release date, which was juxtaposed with another pair of ominous dates, “12.01.49” and “12.02.93,” Pablo Escobar’s birthday and death date, respectively.

The inclusion of Escobar’s lifespan strongly suggests the Colombian drug lord meets his demise at the end of Season 2. Now, however, there is confirmation from Pablo Escobar himself, actor Wagner Moura, that El Patrón will die before Narcos enters Season 3 (if there even will be one). Take a look at what Moura said in an interview with Chelsea Handler:

It’s all about Pablo on the run, because the first season covers ten years of Pablo’s life - the first day he sees cocaine for the first time, to the day he escapes from La Catedral. And now it’s very short, it’s from the day Pablo escapes, to his … death. Pablo’s going to die this season.

Five-plus seasons is typically the golden standard of success in television, but Netflix seems to understand that brevity is crucial to creating quality content. That notion does raise serious questions over the possibility of Narcos Season 3, however. With its main character (who is portrayed in a strangely likeable manner) killed off, how can the show survive? Again, common sense says that it can’t, but with Golden Globe recognition and impressive streaming figures, you never know.

Guess we’ll find out for sure when Narcos Season 2 premieres on Netflix Sept. 2.
