In a surprise move, Nintendo has put the Metroid Prime: Federation Force minigame, Blast Ball , on the Nintendo eShop for free.

While the official download says it’s a demo, it seems that the download is the complete minigame with a solo play mode that allows for players to rank up, download play for anyone who has not downloaded the game and even an online mode.

In Blast Ball , players control mechsuits to shoot the blast ball into the opposing team’s goal in 3-on-3 matches. It’s similar to soccer but you’ll gain powerups along the way and can knock your opponent out, giving your team a man advantage.

Blast Ball is a part of the Metroid Prime: Federation Force game that is set to release on Aug. 19 and has received plenty of fan backlash since its announcement back at E3 2015.

Fans have wanted a continuation of the Metroid Prime story since the third of the trilogy completed years ago and with the lukewarm reception Metroid Other M received, the expectations for Samus’ next outing are pretty high. And those expectations were not met as Federation Force puts players in the Metroid Prime world, but as faceless/nameless soldiers of the Galactic Federation.

It’s a co-op shooter that allows for 3DS owners to join their friends on missions similar to Destiny .

Blast Ball , on the other hand, was introduced back when Metroid Prime: Federation Force was announced and gives players a taste of the gameplay and look of the game before its official release.
