Great news, Spider-Man fans! Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed that his team, not Sony, has been handed total creative control over developing Spider-Man: Homecoming.

"Amy Pascal, Tom Rothman, who runs Sony now, I’ve known for years,” Feige told HeyUGuys. “So, it’s been great. They really are supportive in allowing us to make the creative decisions to make [Spider-Man: Homecoming], but they’ve been great partners. So far so good on that movie."

This a huge deal for several reasons: as you may recall, the upcoming Spider-Man reboot was made possible thanks to a deal struck between Marvel and Sony that allows Peter Parker to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU, along with the rest of the Avengers. MCU fans were initially delighted to hear the news, but quickly became jaded after learning Sony would still retain creative control of the popular superhero.

However, now that Feige has reassured Marvel’s following that his team will be in control, Spider-Man: Homecoming is all but guaranteed to live up to the “Amazing” title created by Stan Lee. Sony, bless its heart, played a huge role in bringing superhero movies to the mainstream with 2001’s Spider-Man. But as the years passed, the caliber of Spidey films gradually decreased, even as a much better actor (Andrew Garfield) stepped into a rebooted role.

But it’s not just an improvement on quality that makes Feige’s latest comments such great news. More encouraging is the fact that Marvel can seamlessly introduce a Marvel character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. See how that makes sense? Why wrestle with Sony when the property that created the character should obviously be in charge? In just a brief look, you can already tell that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man remains much truer to the original Peter Parker than any prior film adaptation.

Early reviews indicate that Spider-Man is one of the best aspects of Captain America: Civil War, and this is just the beginning. Holland will get a chance to impress audiences solo in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and with Marvel Studios overseeing the creative process, Peter Parker is about to get seriously cool (again).

Captain America: Civil War arrives in theaters May 6, followed by Spider-Man: Homecoming sometime in 2017.
