‘How To Get Away With Murder’ Season 3 Spoiler: Could Wes’ Father Be Someone Other Than Wallace Mahoney?

One of the biggest surprises of Season 2 of How to Get Away with Murder was learning the identity of Wes’ father. Flashback episodes show that Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) met Wes’ mother through work and deduced that his father was her client, Wallace Mahoney (Adam Arkin). In the show, Annalise discloses the truth to Wes, who later goes to New York to confront his father, only to watch him get shot in the head.

While the show suggested that Mahoney raped Rose and was the father, at no point was there any concrete evidence like a DNA test, confession or paternity test. In fact, Annalise’s only proof was that she could see it in Rose’s eyes.

There could, however, be another Mahoney who is Wes’ father: Charles Mahoney (portrayed by Hart of Dixie alum Wilson Bethel). The younger Mahoney was on trial for killing his fiancee. If he is Wes’ father, then Wes would be Wallace Mahoney’s grandson.

The ABC drama did not feature Bethel’s character as much as he could have, which raises speculation if his character will return in Season 3. Or it could have something to do with the fact that Bethel is co-starring on A&E Network’s hip-hop crime drama pilot The Infamous. (It should be noted that Matt McGorry, who plays Asher Millstone on the ABC drama, juggled both How to Get Away with Murder and Orange Is the New Black.)

As for Wallace Mahoney’s killer, creator Peter Nowalk told Variety it is possible that Mahoney’s killer be revealed in the first minute. “There are two options for me — it’s either in the first minute in the show, or that’s a longer mystery because it’s a more complicated story,” said Nowalk.

How to Get Away With Murder returns for a third season on ABC in the fall.
