Call Of Duty: WWII Zombies will get its big reveal during San Diego Comic-Con on July 20, but Sledgehammer Games has already taken to Twitter to squash some rumors about the mode. While WWII will feature third-person perspectives in some capacity, studio co-founder Michael Condrey says Zombies won’t be part of it.

The confirmation came when one fan asked about rumors regarding a switch to third-person for the co-op mode. Condrey called that speculation “crushed,” while adding that ”the game is about gun and combat skill across all modes. Though, HQ is also a social and peacocking space so it is largely third-person.”

The rumors originate from two different sources, and both of them appear to have been fairly exaggerated by fans. In last month’s issue of EDGE Condrey himself teased that WWII Zombies would be “unique to our Dead Space signature.” That statement, coupled with an official video where a third-person soldier can be seen on a computer screen, had some fans wondering if “Dead Space signature” signaled a return to the EA franchise’s over-the-shoulder perspective. Predictably, the footage seen in the video was a glimpse at Headquarters, not Zombies.

For those who missed the memo on how Headquarters relates to Call Of Duty: WWII , it’s a 48-player social space that the game’s entire multiplayer suite funnels through. Not only will everyone approach NPCs to gather various online objectives and enter lobbies, but there will also be a few small mini-games too. There’s a firing range for weaponry practice, and even a 1v1 PvP combat pit. Perspectives will switch once those skill-based activities begin.

In short, Headquarters is a place for players to compare their stripes and strut their stuff in front of other community members. With that somewhat vain goal in mind, the third-person perspective makes a ton of sense. Players will want to make sure they look their best if they intend to make an impression in front of others. It’s the first time in franchise history that we’ll see a Call Of Duty mode in third-person, but that mode won’t be Zombies.

In terms of Zombies mode, there’s only a little more we know beyond its Dead Space roots. Just like single-player, the co-op campaign will be rooted in historical events. Clues from the game’s teaser site suggest that Nazi failures during Operation Barbarossa and the Battle Of Dunkirk will push Hitler and his colleagues to create a Zombie virus for defense. That much was gleaned via clues found after the game’s unveiling in April. We’ll likely know a lot more about the plot after the reveal next week. Until then, fans may want to check out Infinite Warfare’s new DLC chapter, Attack Of The Radioactive Thing.
