BioWare GM Steps Down, Mass Effect Vet Steps Up

Does this mean the Mass Effect franchise is saved?

Aaryn Flynn, the general manager of developer BioWare, has announced he will step down from his position at the end of July. Don’t worry though, as his replacement is none other than Casey Hudson.

In a blog post on the BioWare site, Flynn explained why he will be leaving the developer. The big reason why he felt comfortable leaving was because he knew Hudson would replace him.

“I have been contemplating changes in my own life for some time, but when I heard that Casey had confirmed he was up for the task, I realized the opportunities before us,” Flynn said. “I will be working with him over the next couple of weeks to help catch him up and do my part to set him up for success to be the best GM he can be.”

Hudson had been working at BioWare up until three years ago. He originally left to explore new technologies by working at Microsoft on the HoloLens. Before leaving Bioware, Hudson was the director and leader of the Mass Effect team.

“The last few years have been transformative for me, from having time to reflect on what I most want to do, to working with new technologies at platform scale,” Hudson said in his own blog post titled ‘Coming Home.’ “And now, I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to return to lead BioWare – a studio that I think of as home.”

So what does this mean for BioWare? In the big picture, probably not much. The company is still hard at work on Anthem and probably getting ramped up on the next Dragon Age game. However, seeing as how a Mass Effect veteran like Hudson is now in charge, this could mean a brighter future for the Mass Effect franchise.

EA hasn’t officially commented on the matter, but inside reports say the company has cancelled DLC plans for Mass Effect: Andromeda and put the franchise on ice. It seems like a no-brainer to put the franchise back in the hands of Hudson, but maybe that’s because I’m too much of a Mass Effect fanboy.

So what do you think? Are you excited to see Casey Hudson back at BioWare? Do you think this could mean a revival of Mass Effect ? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
