Xbox has confirmed that game exclusivity with be on a "case-by-case" basis, which means that it will depend on the individual title alone and not because of other factors.

Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty confirmed that the company's approach to console exclusivity will not follow a blanket rule going forward.

Xbox Confirms Game Exclusivity Will Be 'Case-by-Case'

Booty stated in an interview with Gamertag Radio that Xbox console exclusivity for its first-party titles will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

This confirmation came after the Xbox Games Showcase revealed which platforms several major upcoming titles would be releasing on, with some landing exclusively on Xbox and PC, while others were confirmed for PS5 and Switch 2 as well.

Booty explained the decision behind this, stating that at the core of the strategy, Microsoft wants to reward longtime fans who have supported the platform for years while also giving consumers a reason to consider buying an Xbox console in the first place.

He added that the company wants to make the right decision rather than the fast decision when determining which titles receive console exclusivity.

There is no denying that Microsoft owns many of the publishers and studios that deliver many of the world's most popular games, but the company has already previously claimed that it will share these titles to other platforms.

Xbox's Exclusive Games Will Be Dependent

According to GameRant, Booty confirmed that the exclusivity strategy will not affect games with multiplayer and live-service functionality as those will continue to be released and supported across multiple platforms. Titles like "Sea of Thieves," "The Elder Scrolls Online," and "Fallout 76" will still receive updates on all platforms as a result.

Booty also addressed concerns from fans who had already been following multiplatform announcements. Any Xbox titles that were previously confirmed as multiplatform launches will still honor those commitments.

This means that "Fable" and "Halo: Campaign Evolved" will still release on PS5 alongside Xbox Series X/S and Windows PC as originally stated.

What remains less clear is how future "Halo" releases will be handled as "Halo: Campaign Evolved" does not include multiplayer support, and this makes it automatically qualify for a PS5 release under the current approach.

Whether future entries with multiplayer would be treated differently has not been directly addressed.

Upcoming Xbox-Exclusive Games

Two titles confirmed during the Xbox Games Showcase are already operating under the new case-by-case framework. "Gears of War: E-Day" will be a console exclusive when it launches on October 6, and "Clockwork Revolution" has also been confirmed as an Xbox console exclusive.

Both games were cited specifically by Booty as examples of titles that fall under the new exclusivity strategy.

This is because they are positioned as platform anchors designed to give Xbox hardware a clear identity heading into the next console generation.

With the next-gen Project Helix console also in development at Microsoft, the exclusivity conversation is only going to become more pointed as that hardware approaches its own launch and eventual release.
