The first images for The Walking Dead Season 7 episode 9 tease a meeting between Rick and Gregory at the Hilltop. Rick might look like he’s back to his old ways, but don’t be fooled; Gregory won’t join the fight so easily.

[Warning: The Walking Dead comic book spoilers ahead]

Gregory made the mistake of asking Rick to kill Negan for him. He assumed Rick was capable of taking out Negan; at the very least, if Rick got caught Gregory could throw him under the bus. However, you saw Gregory bend the knee to Negan when Trevor from Grand Theft Auto V came around. You think Gregory will be loyal to Rick and Maggie? NO SIR.

We wouldn’t be surprised if Gregory ran off to let Negan know the communities were planning an uprising. Maggie is slowly taking over the Hilltop community and Gregory can smell the power shift in the air. Maggie is a much more capable leader and the Hilltop community actually respects her. When the Saviors opened the Hilltop gates to let the walkers in, Maggie quickly hatched a plan to stop the invasion. Maggie saved many lives while Gregory watched on.

Maggie is a threat to Gregory; he will not go down without a fight. Gregory wants the glory and worship from the Hilltop community. Gregory wants the power; it’s all he has left in the post-apocalyptic world.

Will Gregory agree to help Rick? It likely won’t be right away. It will probably take a lot of Maggie convincing the Hilltop members they need to take down Negan in order to live in peace. If the show follows the comics, the Hilltop will create their own democracy and elect a new leader. Gregory will not like the outcome of the election.

However, it might be a while before Maggie rises to power. In the comics, Maggie has her baby boy before she even thinks about taking on the role of leader and it’s not something she chooses. The Hilltop community kind of drops the responsibility on her lap and she takes it. Maggie is a strong leader and will stand up for her people, even if it means going against Rick at times.
