Another year is in the books, but 2015 did not depart without leaving us some great movies. Golden Globe nominees are already in the books, and the Academy is gearing up to crown some fine achievements in filmmaking. But alas, all good things must come to an end. And so with the new year, we turn our attention to 2016 and what she has to offer in movie magic.

As should be no surprise in the age of reboots and sequels, Hollywood is preparing to release a slew of franchise films. Given their popularity across multiple generations, it’s no surprise that the top 10 most-anticipated movies of 2016 fall within that category. Fandango recently released its annual “Hot List,” which surveys over 1,000 people to get an idea of public favor.

X-Men: Apocalypse, Star Trek Beyond and Bourne 5 all feature on the Hot List, which are all expected to curry favor with critics as well as perform well at the box office. The live-action version of The Jungle Book is the only true reboot on the list.

Surprisingly, the most “original” concept on the list is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – which just so happens to top the survey. You might be hard-pressed to deem Star Wars a unique idea, but Rogue One will certainly enter uncharted territory with Disney / Lucasfilm’s first spin-off “anthology” movie. Rogue One will feature an entirely new cast and transport us back to the days before the first death star.
