A new trailer for The Surge is out this week, highlighting the limb removal and weapon retrieval mechanics at the heart of the upcoming action-RPG. The new clip isn’t especially long, with a runtime just over two minutes, but this week’s The Surge trailer offers an early look at several new enemies, environments and weapons. We even get a sneak peek at the crafting system.

We’ve known for several months that dismemberment would play a role in The Surge’s loot system and targeting specific body parts would occasionally yield new gear for the player. But our latest look at the game goes a bit further than previous videos, showing us exactly how players can target specific exosuit modifications and how the technical scrap recovered during the campaign can be repurposed. The accompanying video description also gives us a better understanding of how Deck13 incorporates limb targeting into combat, forcing players to weigh the potential gains of stronger gear against the risk faced in longer engagements.

Its unclear how big of a role crafting will play in The Surge, whether it’s intended as a companion to the loot system or if some gear will only be obtainable via schematics. We also don’t know if there’s a specific process to obtaining those blueprints or if they’ll simply be dispersed along with other randomized loot. But it’s nice to see that mutilating our foes won’t be the only way to earn new gear when The Surge hits stores next month.

For a closer look at The Surge , take a few minutes to watch the new “Target, Loot And Equip” trailer from Deck13 and Focus Home Interactive. Then head down to the comments section and let us know if you’re planning to check out The Surge when the game debuts next month.

The Surge is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The game debuts May 16.
