New details on The Surge are making the rounds on Tuesday, courtesy of a PlayStation Blog update from creative director Jan Klose, and it sounds like the latest offering from Deck13 Interactive will be exactly what sci-fi loving action-RPG fans have been waiting for. To be fair, who doesn’t want to customize an exo-suit and fist fight a few mechs?

If you aren’t familiar with the game, The Surge is an upcoming action-RPG from Deck13 that ditches the fantasy trappings we typically see in Souls-like games in favor of a more futuristic aesthetic. Rather than searching for new swords, shields and other armor, players will hunt down upgrades for the combat-focused exo suit they’ll rely on throughout the game. And, of course, there will be plenty of brawls between the protagonist and the various mechs (and other enemies) encountered throughout The Surge.

This week, we learned the Dark Souls franchise won’t be the only one to exert major influence on The Surge . According to Klose, Deck13 drew inspiration from Metroidvania games too, designing sprawling levels with areas that only become accessible once the player locates the necessary upgrade(s) for his or her exo suit. In another departure from the series that inspired it, The Surge will also feature location-specific damage, making it possible to remove individual limbs (or other attachments) from an opponent. You can even integrate those parts into your own exo suit.

For a closer look at The Surge, take a few minutes to check out the game’s E3 2016 trailer (at the top of this post) and/or the brand new gamescom 2016 trailer embedded below. Then head down to the comments section and share your current impressions of The Surge. Update: We've also embedded a new 14-plus minute gameplay video, published by Focus Home Interactive on Tuesday morning.

The Surge is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The game is expected to debut sometime in 2017.
