Bayonetta and Fire Emblem’s Corrin are the latest and final DLC characters in Super Smash Bros. 4 for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS and while players waited awhile to purchase the two new fighters, the time spent with each will surely make up for it.

Both fighters are unique in their own ways, and while you are still finding the best ways to fight with Corrin and Bayonetta, we’ve compiled some tips and tricks to mastering playing with the final Super Smash Bros. DLC characters.

CORRIN

The sixth(!) Fire Emblem is Corrin from Fire Emblem Fates and this latest swordsman (or woman if you prefer) has the power of dragons on his side.

BASICS

First off, Corrin isn’t as fast/nimble as Lucina or Marth but isn’t as hard-hitting as Roy or Ike. The way Corrin moves around reminds us of Robin.

Corrin may be stronger than Lucina or Marth but Corrin’s attack speed leaves much to be desired. You’ll have to consider this when attacking and change your strategy when facing faster opponents.

Since Corrin uses a sword and a lance, the strikes are not as quick so you’ll have to time it right.

A good trick to note is Corrin’s aerial back A attack. This will let Corrin sprout wings to protect you from any opponent who wishes to attack from behind. This, however, is great to give Corrin an extra jump to make it to a ledge.

SMASH ATTACKS

Corrin’s Side Smash lets him use his dragonlance to attack the opponent. This is one of the longest ranged attacks in all of Super Smash Bros. And like Marth, the tip of the sword is where it's most powerful. Consider this when launching your smash attack.

Corrin’s Down Smash uses the lance in the front and its sword from the back. It’s always great to have a Down Smash attack that covers both your back and front but be wary that the sword attack on your back side is short so the opponent will have to be close enough to be hit.

The Up Smash allows Corrin to transform his head to a dragon and sprout horns that can attack any airborne enemy. Again, this attack doesn’t have the largest range so be smart when using it. Use it too soon and you’ll be wide open.

SPECIALS

Corrin’s standard special allows him to launch a water ball from his hands. You can charge this to deal maximum damage. Every hit paralyzes the enemy, but the duration depends on how long you’ve charged the attack.

It’s also good to note that after every launch of the water ball, the dragon hands chomp down just in case an opponent dodges the attack but isn’t aware of how close they get. This chomp can also be charged.

The Dragon Lunge is Corrin’s Side Special and has Corrin jump forward before piercing the enemy with his lance. If you stick the lance into the ground you can hold Corrin up, you can even pin down opponents to the ground.

This allows Corrin to either forward kick, back kick, jump or cancel. So once you pin down an enemy, you can perform a forward kick to deal extra damage. Choose based on the situation you’re in, but this special gives Corrin a lot of options to attack and defend.

Dragon Ascent is Corrin’s Up Special and is Corin’s primary recovery technique. But it’s not just for recovery, Dragon Ascent can be used to attack airborne enemies or even attack enemies from either side on the ground.

You can change the trajectory of Corrin’s launch when using Dragon Ascent so think about it before performing the attack.

And finally, Corrin’s Down Special is his counter attack. When timed correctly, Corrin will stop an attack and transform into a dragon, launching the enemy into the air. The water current that sprouts from either side of Corrin gives this attack some range and can attack multiple enemies.

However, the timing of Counter Surge needs to be more precise than Marth or Lucina’s counter attacks. Keep practicing and you’ll get the timing right.

BAYONETTA

Probably the most unusual, and controversial , addition to Super Smash Bros. 4 is none other than Bayonetta. The umbra witch joins the fight with an array of attacks and vicious combos and from the first announcement video, she seemed like a formidable opponent.

BASICS

The first thing you’d want to know about Bayonetta is that she is very light. Almost every heavy hit sends her flying, no matter who is dealing it. That’s the first thing you’ll need to understand about Bayonetta. You’ll need to choose wisely when you want to attack and how you want to go about fighting an opponent.

We’ll get into this aspect in more detail when we talk about her Smash Attacks and Specials.

With all that said, Bayonetta hits VERY hard but is very agile. Her moves and movements are similar to Zero Suit Samus. You can launch yourself and get major air and her attacks are quick and easy to combo into.

If you find yourself in close range, launch your punches, which will perform a nifty combo that racks up the damage and gives you the distance you need to perform some of your specials.

You can also hold down your attacks to launch your bullet arts to deal extra damage.

Also, like Zero Suit Samus Bayonetta has a DOWN A attack when you’re in the air that launches you downward. Bayonetta will perform a heel drop attack that can really deal extra damage and can finish off some of Bayonetta’s impressive aerial combos.

SMASH ATTACKS

Bayonetta’s Smash attacks hit very very hard. She summons the limbs of her Madama Butterfly demon to deal damage from another dimension. However, these Smash attacks are a tad slower so timing is the key because Bayonetta is left wide open once they are performed.

The forward Smash attack is the easiest kills hot for Bayonetta as the witch’s fist drives forward. But this can be avoided and you’ll be open for attack.

Her Up Smash is a great anti-air attack because it’s not actually Bayonetta performing the attack the Up Smash can cancel out any possibility of a tie or weapon priority from a possible Down A attack. You can also use this to hit opponents who are lying down waiting to roll away from attacks.

Bayonetta’s Down Smash has her witch’s foot come down and perform a meteor smash. Use this attack to catch opponent’s trying to reach the ledge and meteor smash them to their deaths. You can also perform this attack to finish off any opponent who likes to hold onto the ledge.

SPECIALS

Bayonetta’s Standard B is her Bullet Climax. Like Fox, Bayonetta will shoot a barrage of bullets at the opponent. These won’t slow down your opponent so be sure you have distance before using.

You can also charge Bullet Climax to deal more damage and slow down the opponent. It should also be noted that the bullets don’t really go in a straight line but curve upwards. Use this deal extra chip damage while your opponent tries to get back onto the battlefield.

Bayonetta’s Down Special is her Witch Time ability. This acts as a counter so you’ll need precise timing to activate it. It only works on one opponent at a time so be wary of multiple opponents.

Also, the length of time that is slowed down depends on the opponent’s health. The higher the damage they have received the longer they will stay in Witch Time. You also have to watch out for repeated usage of Witch Time. Consecutive usese will shorten the time no matter how much damage the enemy has.

But if your timing is on point all the time, Bayonetta will still evade attacks if you are late.

Bayonetta’s Side Special is her Heel Slide that acts like Captain Falcon’s Side Special. Bayonetta launches herself across the floor, which you can then kick your opponent upwards to begin a nasty aerial combo.

If you perform this special in the air, you can slide across the air. This is a great recovery tactic that you can also perform again if needed.

Press DOWN after performing the aerial Side Special and you can kick diagonally and if you are used to using Ryu’s Hadouken commands, then you can kick the opponent up in the air to begin a combo.

Bayonetta’s Up Special is her Witch Twist and it can be used to launch yourself straight in the air. The great thing about this Special is you can move immediately after using it, unlike a lot of the character’s Up Specials. So you can actually use the Witch Twist twice to go even higher. this is ideal for recovering

Like all of Bayonetta’s attacks, holding down the B button after performing the Witch Twist will allow her to shoot bullets upwards.

Be cautious though, the more moves performed after the initial Witch Twist will leave Bayonetta more vulnerable to attacks.
