Super Mario Odyssey was always going to be a big hit. Ever since it was announced during a Nintendo Direct in early 2017, fans were hyped to get a brand new 3D Mario game for the Nintendo Switch.

And if there was anyone on the fence about Super Mario Odyssey , Nintendo’s E3 2017 presentation and the brand-new footage of the upcoming Mario game likely sold you on how epic and fun this upcoming title is going to be.

I got to play some of Nintendo’s upcoming new Switch titles at E3 2017 and Super Mario Odyssey was the first one I tried out. I can easily say that it plays even better than it looks.

I got to experience both the Sand Kingdom and Metro Kingdom (home to New Donk City) and what they have to offer in the E3 build.

Each world is very detailed and unique. The Sand Kingdom is much more wide-open, the locals are way more memorable and there are a ton of different enemies.

Metro Kingdom, and particularly New Donk City, is the bustling metropolis that the trailers depict, but there is so much going on, from Easter eggs to the Donkey Kong franchise (the character the city is named after), to Mystery Boxes being places where walk signals are. This is the stage everyone will talk about and revisit because you can’t possibly catch everything the first time around.

I got to explore more of New Donk City than the Sand Kingdom and it was amazing to see how the metropolis wasn’t confined to its borders.

Mario can climb to the tops of buildings and even go down certain manholes to access different areas. Not to mention being able to transform into electricity to ride up wires and get to the tops of buildings much easier.

Speaking of transforming, as we saw from the E3 trailer, Cappy is Mario’s trusty sidekick for this game and is his only weapon. You can perform a classic Mario jump or super drop on enemies but you’ll mostly be throwing your cap at enemies or hard-to-reach coins.

Mario can throw the cap faster than you think to combat multiple enemies at once and it even works when you’re using the motion controls. Flicking your wrists like you were throwing a hat makes Mario perform those moves and it works just as well as inputing a single button.

The process of transforming (or possessing) is actually very fun and I found myself possessing traffic cones and flicking my way across blocks to get to my destination faster.

What really impressed me was how fluid and fast Mario can move around. In previous Mario 3D adventures, his movements seemed stiff and unnatural. In Super Mario Odyssey, you’re running around like a mad plumber and it just feels great to get around certain destinations across levels more easily.

There’s also the coins scattered around each world. In Super Mario Odyssey , each kingdom has their own special purple coin for Mario to purchase clothes and other goods while the traditional gold coins can also purchase items but can also revive Mario when he dies. The different clothes shown off in the latest trailer are all there and it’ll be interesting to see what others will appear when you explore the other kingdoms. That is going to be something everyone looks forward to.

Super Mario Odyssey is a great game. I was already hooked from the short time that I got to play it and I just wanted to continue to unravel the mysteries of each world and to ultimately save Princess Peach.

The locals, obstacles and enemies in each kingdom make those worlds feel alive and give the game a lot of personality that will stay with gamers for years.

Nintendo has another huge hit for the Nintendo Switch on its hands.

Super Mario Odyssey will release for Nintendo Switch on Oct. 27.

REVIEW SUMMARY
Super Mario Odyssey

Charming, Fun And The Best Game Of 2017
The Nintendo Switch title has slick controls, amazing visuals and a charm (there’s that word again) that I haven't come across before. The story is simple but supplemented with a large cast of new characters and worlds that expand the Mario Universe in a way that, hopefully, Nintendo can expand on for years to come. It’s accessible for younger players and challenging enough for veterans.
  • Visually pleasing
  • Great Story
  • Controls are amazing and uses Switch motion controls the best
  • Great new characters and environments
  • Could be more difficult
  • Camera angles can get annoying
