First round of Suicide Squad movie reviews are in. The good news is DC’s villain skwad is topping the disaster that was Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. The bad news is that’s not much of a compliment at this point.

Early reviews are dragging Suicide Squad with one Vanity Fair critic stating, “David Ayer's super-villain team-up is dull, uninspired, and perhaps worst of all, forgettable.” Another harsh reviewer from ScreenCrush called the film outright, “Bland, boring, and sometimes borderline incoherent.” The overall score on Rotten Tomatoes, a movie database which compiles reveiws from verified sites, is at 37% rotten with just 28 reviews in. Batman vs. Superman ended its run with a 27% rotten rating.

The less cynical reviewers admitted Suicide Squad had its faults, but still praised the film for its sense of humor and action despite dark themes. A critic from We Got This Covered said the DC movie was, “Haphazardly paced and generically plotted, Suicide Squad benefits immensely from the winning presence of Will Smith's Deadshot and Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn.”

Will the mixed reviews keep hardcore DC fans away from theaters this weekend? Definitely not. Suicide Squad is currently on track for a $140 million opening weekend and the hype around the movie is enough to draw big crowds. Most of the critics so far praise Smith and Robbie for their stellar performances. Empire Magazine certified the movie fresh stating, “Like Avengers Assemble forced through a Deadpool mangle, Suicide Squad gives new life to DC's big-screen universe. So bad-to-the-bone it's good.”

Still, it seems like DC is heading in the right direction. Hopefully the upcoming Wonder Woman and Justice League movies will fair better with critics. DC’s Suicide Squad is out in theaters Aug. 2
