‘Stardew Valley’ Relationship Guide: How To Get Married And Find Friends In Pelican Town

We’re still digging through Stardew Valley, trying to make the most of our time with ConcernedApe’s hit country life sim, and all you shippers out there will be pleased to know we’re finally ready to break down the many social and romantic relationships that players can build while playing Stardew Valley.

Social life plays a surprisingly significant role in the Stardew Valley gameplay loop. Players can befriend most residents from Pelican Town, with a few exceptions, and even pursue a romantic relationship with the bachelor or bachelorette of their choice. Establishing friendships with the villagers is pretty simple, requiring little more than sporadic gifts – you can only give two items a villager per week, so choose carefully – and taking part in the occasional town festival. Visiting residents throughout the week and striking up a conversation seems to help, too. Thankfully, players are rewarded for the efforts. Many residents of Pelican Town will begin mailing recipes to the player after the friendship has reached three-heart status. But finding a spouse will require a bit more effort and a fairly significant cash investment.

Once you’ve built an eight-heart relationship with a potential spouse, players will need to purchase a special bouquet from Pierre’s grocery store. Once acquired, present the bouquet to the villager you’ve chosen to woo and you’ll begin a romantic relationship. From there, players will need to save 5000 gold to purchase a Mermaid’s Pendant from the Old Mariner who appears on the beach on rainy days. You also need to have rebuilt the beach on the bridge, a project we recommend undertaking during your first year on the farm, and purchased at least one upgrade for your house. Present the pendant to the villager you’d like to marry and a wedding ceremony will take place three days later.

Fair warning: Getting married doesn’t mean you can stop paying attention to your spouse. Members of the Stardew Valley community have already identified a variety of less-than-ideal scenarios that players can encounter when conversing with villagers they chose to marry. Some have been accused of secretly giving gifts to other women, while other players find themselves raising someone else’s child. So you’ll probably want to make time for your husband/wife on a semi-regular basis.
