With all the hype surrounding Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ latest record-breaking achievement, it may be easy to forget that there’s another Star Wars movie heading our way in less than a year. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is slated to release in December, and rumors regarding the nature of the film’s plot and characters have already started to stir.

Recent reports indicate that Rogue One’s trailer is set to arrive with the release of Captain America: Civil War, but until then, it’s all speculation. With that being said, the first batch of potentially legit info has begun to leak from typically credible sources such as Making Star Wars. Because Rogue One is the first of the Star Wars “anthology” films (spin-offs), not much is known in terms of what to expect. Director Gareth Edwards described Rogue One as a “heist movie,” and early depictions seem to indicate a half espionage, half war film kind of vibe. Without further ado, take a look at the first Star Wars: Rogue One rumors including character details, a key location, and scene description (SPOILERS BELOW):

The first rumors come from Making Star Wars, who has helped break key Episode VII news in the past. Though any unconfirmed rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, MSW is accurate more often than not.

The site claims to have information on Mads Mikkelsen’s character, who they describe as the chief Imperial scientist responsible for getting the completed Death Star functional. As the film progresses, it turns out that he begins to feel guilty for developing a superweapon capable of inflicting mass destruction. Ultimately, Mikkelsen’s character will decide to switch sides. Here’s what Making Star Wars has to say about it:

“Mads Mikkelsen (Galen appears to be his name in the film) is kind of the key to the film in a way. He is a scientist that took over the Geonosian Death Star project. He solved several of the flaws the Empire could not and is sort of a revered person in the Empire for his contributions. However, Mikkelsen’s character is a Robert Oppenheimer-type character. Oppenheimer helped design the atomic bomb only to say, “Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” The guilt “Galen” feels for his contributions to the Empire become too much and he defects, attempting to make things right. In order to do this, he enlists the help of his only daughter….”

Who is Galen’s only daughter? Naturally, it’s the main lead in the film – Felicity Jones’ character. She is the leader of a band of rebel spies (and possibly bounty hunters) who sets off to destroy her father’s greatest work. This would serve as a nice personal touch added to an otherwise basic conflict of stealing the Death Star plans.

The other character who has allegedly joined the cast of Rogue One is Harry Potter veteran Guy Henry. The actor played Ministry of Magic official Pius Thicknesse in the final two Harry Potter movies, and has also starred on the popular BBC series, Holby City.

Not many details regarding his character’s nature have emerged, but Jedi News reports that Henry will play an Imperial officer. If you look at his photo below, you’d be hard-pressed to disagree. The lad clearly looks capable of playing a villain. Hopefully a confirmation of Henry’s involvement in Rogue One will emerge soon.

Rogue One Location and Set Description

Making Star Wars has also provided a description of a potentially key location in the world of Star Wars: Rogue One. The setting sounds urban, but no name of the specific planet is confirmed. Could it be Coruscant – the sprawling capital city-world of the Republic? First instinct may be to believe so, but Star Wars movies and related media have relied on that planet far too often. Let’s hope it’s a new location.

The scene features an X-Wing crash, which causes loads of destruction and alerts the presence of a Stormtrooper squadron. Here’s Making Star Wars’ lengthy description of the scene and location, which appears to reveal two new characters as well:

“On the street, two men walk in front of the wreckage of the black-and-white X-wing fighter. It isn’t clear if they were a part of the crash or if it was just a part of their entrance. The first man has a long rifle that in spirit seems to resemble Doc Brown’s riffle from Back to the Future Part III. He has a black leather trench coat on. His mask is dull red and the visor is like a cross between Kylo Ren and and the Imperial guards from Return of the Jedi. The other man has a brown trench coat and a really big rifle with a stock that reminds me of the guns used on Hoth by the rebels in The Empire Strikes Back. If I had to guess, I would say these two are probably bounty hunters or two of the coolest extras of all time.”

Are these two men the “bounty hunters” Felicity Jones’ rebel spies work with, or perhaps direct members of her team itself? If they’re being pursued by Stormtroopers, it’s likely they’re on the light side. We’ll update you with more information once it’s available.
