Star Wars: Episode 8 is still a year and a half away, but rumors about the next installment continue to spread nevertheless. The latest theory is a big one, as it directly involves the much-debated lineage of Rey’s family. Of course, all fan theories -- especially reddit ones -- must be taken with a grain of salt, but it’s always fun to think about, and who knows?! That being said, we’re about to dive into some potential SPOILERS for Star Wars: Episode 8 and beyond. You've officially been warned.

The latest Star Wars theory claims that Rey is the younger sister of Resistance pilot Poe Dameron. Didn’t see that one coming, did you? The idea comes from reddit user Besslo (h/t Cinema Blend) who came to the conclusion with supporting evidence from the Star Wars comic book series, Shattered Empire.

For those unfamiliar, Shattered Empire takes place directly after the Battle of Endor featured in Return of the Jedi. The comics follow Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia in the aftermath of the fall of the Empire thanks to the deaths of Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine. The galaxy is a big place, however, and small factions of the Empire still join forces to attack a number of star systems. Leia isn’t having that, though -- she leads the charge of disbanding the remaining Empire with the help of a talented female pilot.

Cinema Blend perfectly summarizes what happens next:

This pilot is married to another Rebel fighter, and together they have a son. Luke and this female pilot then travel to a top secret Imperial research lab to take two Force trees, which are "imbued with pure force energy." Luke’s plan is to plant one tree near a Jedi Temple, where he will then set out to train new Jedi fighters. He gives the other to the female pilot, who plants it outside her home. Once she’s done so, it’s revealed that her son is Poe Dameron. Beeslo then hypothesizes that Rey feels the Force so strongly because she was probably conceived under the force tree, while Poe is such an adept pilot because he himself is at one with the Force too because of this magical sapling.

Could this really be a thing?! Rey and Poe Dameron didn’t speak to each other even once throughout all of The Force Awakens, but maybe that was J.J. Abrams' subtle way of setting up a shocking twist in Episode 8 (or later?). And Shattered Empire is a part of Disney’s new Star Wars canon, so anything is possible, I suppose.
