Tokyo Game Show has wrapped up and the awards and accolades have been given out, but there were quite a few surprising choices, and none of them were bigger than Nintendo’s Splatoon receiving the “Award of Excellence”, which is essentially Game of the Year honors, at this year’s show.

What’s surprising is the new Nintendo IP released back in May 2015, garnering a lot of praise during the 2015 awards season, including best Shooter and Multiplayer game at the Video Game Awards. Over a year since its debut, the game is still receiving awards.

According to The Escapist, Splatoon wasn’t the only 2015 video game to be recognized at Tokyo Game Show. Games like Monster Hunter Generations, The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 were all up for Game of the Year honors.

Here’s the full list of recipients of the “Award of Excellence:”

  • Dark Souls III

  • Dragon Quest Builders

  • Fallout 4

  • Metal Gear Solid V

  • Minecraft

  • Monster Hunter Cross

  • Super Mario Maker

  • The Witcher 3

  • Yo-kai Watch Blasters

Splatoon has seen some staying power since its 2015 release with a growing community that has warranted its own tournaments. ESL is holding a special Splatoon tournament this year with the winning team being crowned in 2017 and presented with the upcoming Nintendo NX .
