Rocket League Multiplayer On Switch Was Inspired By Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Rocket League on the Nintendo Switch has already made headlines with the huge news that the game will allow players to compete against each other regardless of what platform people are playing on (except PS4 ). If you’re wondering how Rocket League will handle local multiplayer on the Switch, we finally have confirmation.

Rocket League will allows four-player split-screen when the console is docked and people are using a TV. When on the go, Rocket League will only support two players at once.

"We don’t think people want to squint that much to see four players on an undocked system," Psyonix vice president Jeremy Dunham told IGN.

This also comes down to how Rocket League performs on the Switch. The more players going on one screen at once, the harder the system has to work to keep everything nice and smooth. The goal for Psyonix is to have Rocket League running at 60 frames-per-second, even in split-screen, a feat the developer knows is possible thanks to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

"The fact that they’re getting 60 fps docked and undocked, even in split-screen [with two players in Mario Kart 8 ] is a huge thing for us,” Producer Bobby Garza said. “And then how seamless the multiplayer experience is. Their lobby system isn’t as complex as ours, but it’s so easy to use."

Rocket League on Switch will also have all the same game modes and features as on other consoles. This includes the Dropshot, Hoops, Snow Day and the experimental Rumble game modes as well as online Seasons.

As for whether Rocket League will use any of the Switch’s unique features like HD rumble, motion or touch controls, Psyonix remained quiet. It was mentioned there would be “more official word” on that coming before the game is released. No release date has been announced either, but Rocket League is expecting to come to Nintendo’s latest console this holiday season.

So what do you think? Are you excited to know you can play Rocket League on the go with friends with only one Switch? Do you wish four-player multiplayer was included while undocked or do you agree that it would be too hard to see anything? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
