After Game Freak announced a core Pokémon RPG will come to the Nintendo Switch, it seemed Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon would be the last titles on the 3DS. On Thursday, the developer finally gave confirmation of just that.

In an interview with IGN, Game Freak Director Shigeru Ohmori explained each of the 3DS Pokémon offerings pushed the boundaries of what could be achieved on the handheld console.

"When we were making Pokémon X and Y, we really were trying to push the 3DS system to its absolute limits - which is what we thought we’d done. But when Sun and Moon came around, we completely redesigned the system, and actually ended up pushing the 3DS even further to what we thought was the most we could draw out of it."

"With Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon," explains Ohmori, "we’ve tried to eke that out more and really, really push the system to its absolute limits, and we’re now feeling that perhaps this is the maximum of what we can get out. So we’re really treating Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as the culmination of our work with the 3DS system."

While Pokémon spin-off titles coming to the 3DS remains a possibility, especially since Nintendo plans to support the handheld through 2018 , those looking for the core Pokémon experience will have to move to the Nintendo Switch.

The hype around Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon for the Nintendo 3DS has ramped up in recent weeks with announcement after announcement.

During Nintendo’s E3 2017 presentation, Pokémon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara gave a brief message to announce that the Switch will be the new home for Pokémon after the release of Pokken Tournament DX.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon will release for the 3DS on Nov. 17.
