Overwatch has had immense success creating more than 300 different character skins for every member of the shooter’s roster. However, fans that want even more customization may have their wishes granted soon, with the introduction of weapon skins.

This information comes from the ever-watchful eyes of the Overwatch subreddit. Originally discovered by user good_samartian, different guns can be found in game clips released for Doomfist’s preview.

The first instance of a different-looking weapon can be found for a split-second at the 3:59 mark in the video above. While Doomfist is crashing down on the playing field, Soldier: 76 can be seen holding a rifle that doesn’t look like any other weapon found in the game.

This has been captured in a screenshot by reddit user Nyxxic. Soldier: 76 has a big rifle, but there are two prongs sticking out of the front of it. Additionally, there’s an orange squiggly line on the side, something not found on any of his normal weapons.

Nyxxic also shared an image of Sombra using a gun with green accents. While this does match her weapon’s appearance as part of her Glitch skin, Sombra is not in the Glitch skin in the screenshot.

So what does this all mean? Well, it could be a number of things. The most exciting is that Blizzard is making weapon skins so players can further customize their Overwatch characters. Like other skins, these would most likely be unlocked through loot boxes or can be purchased using in-game currency.

Another exciting proposition is that there could be new weapons coming to Overwatch. This could be like Team Fortress 2, with each class having a selection of different weapons to customize play styles. Many on the Overwatch subreddit are hoping the Soldier: 76 gun could be hinting at a flamethrower, something not yet found in the online shooter. This would be a risky, complex move given how important balance is to the game.

However, this could also just be Blizzard testing things out that may never release. The foreign guns come from an internal video highlighting a new character. It’s possible Blizzard was using this time to try new game models or to test out new weapons that aren’t planned on being released. As noted in the subreddit discussion, Blizzard has previously used existing assets when playtesting new heroes. That said, this gun model is definitely not a pre existing asset.

Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll have to wait on Blizzard for an official announcement before getting too excited.

So what do you think? Would you like to see weapon skins come to Overwatch? Would you be more interested in entirely new weapons? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
