Junkrat and Roadhog, Junkertown rascals Blizzard

You can’t hide anything from data miners, who may have just uncovered a new Overwatch map hidden in the PTR. Tumblr user aku no homu found three new voice lines for Overwatch’s sentient A.I. Athena, introducing players to a few new maps. We know that the first two will be featured in the new Deathmatch mode, currently on the PTR, though the third remains a mystery.

“Entering Lijiang Control Center”- a redesigned version of Lijiang Tower, set in the day time. It was the map we saw in the Year Of The Rooster event, Capture The Rooster, now known as Capture The Flag.
“Arriving at Château Guillard”- the newest map revealed by Blizzard, it’s the ancestral home of Widowmaker. It’s a mansion and a castle, complete with pictures of the sniper during happier times, before she was brainwashed by Talon to be an assassin.
“Welcome to Junkertown”- ?

Though we aren’t sure what these voice lines are going to be used for, it does seem pretty likely they’ll go alongside the new mode. Overwatch has allowed players to visit parts of the world ravaged by the Omnic crisis. King’s Row, Watchpoint: Gibraltar and Eichenwalde were all important locations in the war that shaped the game we all know and love. There are still a few places that remain untouched, like South Korea, where a giant sea omnic terrorized their way of life. There’s also Australia, which was nearly wiped off the map during the Omnic Crisis.

Junkertown could be our first visit to the Australian Outback, where Junkrat and Roadhog are from. If you aren’t caught up on your Overwatch lore, the Omnic War started after a few Omniums, the sentient factories where Omnics are made, went haywire. Australia’s was particularly powerful, nearly wiping out all life on the continent. Eventually, a deal was struck with the omnics, where they would get the island in exchange for peace. That angered some of the human locals, who banded together and started the Australian Liberation Front.

The ALF, full of solar farmers and survivalists, fought the omnics tooth and nail for their homeland, eventually leading to catastrophe. The rebels tried to mess around with the omnium’s fusion core, causing it to blow up and irradiate the Australian Outback. Scraps of metal and wreckage littered the scene, causing the area to become inhabitable. Those leftover were called “Junkers” Roadhog took to the open roads, where he eventually met fellow Junker, Junkrat, who was being hunted for learning an unknown secret about the omnium.

There’s so much potential for an Australian omnium map. Junkertown should have you push the Payload – we haven’t gotten a new one since the game launched. Players have to move some dangerous cargo across the irradiated outback, careful not to die of radiation or toxic chemicals.. The outpost would need to look disheveled and quickly pieced together, like Ork machinery in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Masks, shields and broken omnics litter the ground and you can hear the screams and howls of other Junkers as you push the precious cargo forward.

I love Overwatch’s lore and can’t wait to learn more about what happened to Junkrat and Roadhog’s homeland. Who knows what sort of Mad Max inspired civilization their fellow countrymen have cooked up.
