Oculus Looking To Take On Microsoft HoloLens, Hiring For AR Development

Oculus has already positioned itself as one of the leading names in virtual reality, but it looks like the company wants to jump over into the augmented reality scene. This information comes from the job listings on the Oculus website.

Under the “Research” tab on Oculus’ job page, there is a listing for “AR Incubation Lead.” The description for this job mentions a team of engineers, programmers, specialists and designers will be built by the AR Incubation Lead to “build AR technology that opens the path to everyday use for a billion people.”

The only other company that has made AR plans is Microsoft. The company’s HoloLens looks to be the first major AR device, with development kits already available to purchase. It’s unclear if Oculus is looking to create a HoloLens-like device, but given the HoloLens’ big Skype integration, and Oculus being owned by competitor Facebook, the Oculus AR device could end up being similar.

In an article on UploadVR, Oculus spokesperson Brandon Boone said there would be future devices from Oculus outside of the Rift headset. He also mentioned “more coming in the near future.”

Oculus is also aggressively hiring in the hardware, software and design areas as well. These positions include application developers, product designers and more. Clearly, Oculus doesn’t want to be a one-trick pony with the Rift. There is also some hiring going on for content creation, so Oculus could be making some first-party games and apps.

So what do you think? Are you interested in seeing what an AR device from Oculus could be like? Are you more excited for the HoloLens? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
