Call Of Duty could stay in the past after COD: WWII Activision

Call of Duty has spanned a number of different time periods, from the 1940s into the future. With the next entry in the franchise set to return to the series’ World War 2 roots, it seems the past might be the future.

In an interview with Game Informer, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg talked about what’s next for the iconic shooter series along with why the studio felt the time was right to return to the past.

“Well, you know I can’t reveal things on the slate that are several years off, but no I don’t necessarily see it as a one-off,” Hirshberg told Game Informer when asked if the WWII setting was a one-time deal. “I think that World War II and historical settings more broadly are very rich territory, and I think there’s every possibility that that could become an area that we explore more than once. “

Hirshberg also confirmed that the reason for going back to Call of Duty’s roots was because of a combination of fan interest and what the developers wanted to do.

“We started both feeling ourselves as players, and also starting to maybe hear that desire for a return to our roots. And again, when these games take three years to make, it’s a bit of a fool’s errand to try to perfectly time the changing tides of opinion with the slate,” Hirshberg said. “So that’s not the only thing that we listen to; we also listen to the passions of our teams, and I’m a huge believer that you don’t get great games that teams aren’t passionate about making.”

As for if the franchise will ever return to the Advanced Warfare time period, Hirshberg seems doubtful, but doesn’t dismiss the possibility. “ Oh god [laughs]. Just uh, proba– I don’t know [laughs]. I don’t wanna take a decisive position,” he said. “It’s one of those things that, you know, if you stay on the train long enough, the scenery keeps changing.”
