Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom
Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom Bandai Namco / Level-5

A new trailer for Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom was part of this week’s Golden Joystick Awards, giving fans another look at the highly anticipated JRPG before it heads to PC and PS4 in January. And anyone hoping to see more of the people and places we’ll visit in next year’s Ni No Kuni sequel should enjoy the game’s latest trailer.

Hard data isn’t the focus of this week’s Ni No Kuni 2 trailer (just to be clear) but the video does shed some light on what we’ll see in Level-5’s next JRPG. Much of the previous marketing for the game has focused on a sprawling desert environment and portions of the overworld we’ll explore next year. But the latest NNK2 trailer features an abundance of content we don’t recall seeing in the game’s other promotional media. Several bosses are featured in the video, including a frenzied, balrog-like creature (minus all the fire) and an enormous dragon that appears to reside in a volcano. The new trailer also teases several new environments, the most important obviously being the tropical pools near the end of the clip. Vacations are expensive. Pretty video game scenery is much cheaper.

The trailer doesn’t say much of anything about the new JRPG. It’s an excellent demonstration of the Wrath of the White Witch sequel’s vibrance, in regards to its color palette and artistic inspiration. But information about the game’s narrative is still surprisingly limited, given our proximity to the NNK2 release date. We know the Cat and Mouse tribes from the first game are back and that the main protagonist, Evan, is trying to reclaim his lost kingdom. But Level-5 and Bandai Namco are keeping additional plot details quiet for now. Fingers crossed that the ongoing silence isn’t because recent rumors of a launch delay are true.
