A new Metro Exodus trailer suggests major changes are on the horizon, both for the player and the world they explored in Metro 2033 and Last Light. Many franchise foundations seem to remain, from the stealth-shooter gameplay to the need to mask up when traveling above ground, but it looks like the Metro franchise might enter its Snowpiercer phase when Exodus debuts in 2018.

The first half of the trailer covers territory that should immediately feel familiar to any longtime fan. We see Artyom exploring what’s left of Moscow, digging through the rubble searching for something, anything really, that might help the people trapped in the subway system return to a life above ground. We see him hide from a pack of Watchers, who look much creepier in Exodus, and generally being as slow and methodical as we’d expect in a new Metro . It’s all par for the course … right up until it’s not.

Everything changes when the trailer transitions to a shockingly well-preserved Soviet train. We don’t know the locomotive’s origins, and it’s only implied that Artyom is behind the engine’s discovery. But we also see several other functioning trains, including several shots of engines running awfully close to one another. The lack of gameplay means we’ll have to wait until a later date for more information on how trains will factor into the next game in the series. But we’re definitely excited by the prospect of abandoning Moscow’s labyrinthine metro system and finding out who’s going to be King of the Trains when humanity returns to the surface.

Metro Exodus is in development for PS4, Xbox One and PC. The game is expected in Fall 2018.
