NBA 2K18 has a brand new social hub called The Neighborhood, and it blends MyPark, Pro-Am, and MyCareer in a single place. Simply put, it’s like Destiny’s Tower for basketball fans. It unites all these modes to make the quest to 99 a lot more manageable. In other words, players no longer need to grind careers to earn the top spot. Instead, the stats increase and carry over no matter which way you play.

When players begin their NBA 2K18 adventure they’ll be connected in a massive open-world space. Starting with MyPlayer, The Neighborhood will feature tons of ways to customize your avatar. It’s got areas to get tattoos, sneakers and more. Walking down those streets, there are also small half courts with mini-games including King Of The Court, three-point shootouts, dunk contests, limited events and more. It’s worth noting that that’s all available before even arriving at the park.

“The park is still in there,” 2K Digital Marketing Director Ronnie Singh said during the mode’s debut stream, “but it’s inside this new experience.” It’s tucked inside a brand new Playground area, and it seems to contain everything fans of the mode are looking for.

As far as gameplay is concerned, The Neighborhood adds several player archetypes on primary and secondary levels. The names of these groupings weren’t revealed, but they’re able to influence your MyPlayer’s playstyle and development. Within this system, a brand new practice gym allows tuning to work only on the stats you want to work on. Alerts and recommendations from the coach won’t be bothering you in The Neighborhood. With exploration, competition and socialization at the forefront, it’s all about creating an NBA 2K experience that’s purely your own.

This NBA 2K18 The Neighborhood reveal arrives as a part of the game’s PAX West showcase. In addition to this open-world bombshell, fans also got their first glimpse at the game’s reworked cover to reflect Kyrie Irving’s trade to the Boston Celtics. It’s also the first time for fans to go hand-on with the Nintendo Switch version of the game.

NBA 2K18 comes to PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Switch and PC Sept. 19. A Prelude demo comes to PS4 and Xbox One Sept. 8.

NBA 2K18 PS4 Review - Great Basketball With A Price
The action is fun and fluid, but the VC grind gets its grubby hands on everything and takes the shine off that noteworthy achievement.
  • Great basketball mechanics
  • Easy for new players to learn
  • MyGM's story content is a great starting point for the future.
  • The Neighborhood social hub feels empty and pointless
  • Microtransactions ruin what would otherwise be a fun experience
  • MyCareer story is a bit dull
