The upcoming live-action Minecraft movie release date has been confirmed, and it’ll be a while. The Minecraft movie’s upcoming release date is May 24, 2019 in both 3D and IMAX. Better mark that day off in your 2019 agenda!

Mojang issued a statement on its website that reads:

“Yes, that might seem like a long time away, but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome. And we all want an awesome Minecraft movie, right? That's it for now, but as time goes on we'll share loads more. Loads!”

Minecraft will be directed and written by It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Rob McElhenne. Aside from that, there’s really no further information about plot or characters or actors, which makes sense this early in the game.

In an interview with Collider, producer Roy Lee gave the movie’s logline: “Minecraft would be part of a multiverse where humans can enter that has the feel of what the live action version of a Minecraft experience.” He also explained that Mojang is deeply involved in the Minecraft movie’s development:

“So they know everything is going to be in the movie that can give us insight into future updates so we can put things into the movie around the same time they relaunch newer versions of the game and at the same time, potentially taking ideas from the movie and putting them into the game. So I don’t know exactly what things are going into the game, but they know exactly what’s going into the movie.”

That was a little Mojo Jojo-style, but sure.
