The announcement of the Madden cover athlete is a yearly event nowadays, and the football star that will grace the cover of Madden NFL 17 will be announced this week.

On May 12, during the 6 p.m. EDT broadcast of SportsCenter, the Madden 17 cover athlete will be revealed, along with with the first gameplay trailer.

In the past, EA and the Madden team would have the cover athlete be chosen by the fans in a tournament style vote, but it seems that this year the cover will be selected by the team like it used to be.

With the choices for Madden cover athletes being kept under wraps, the overall theme of Madden 17 is being kept a secret. Madden 16 narrowed the choice of cover athletes down to New York Giants’ wideout Odell Beckham Jr., who would become the cover athlete, New England Patriots Tight End Rob Gronkowski, Arizona Cardinals Cornerback Patrick Peterson, and Pittsburgh Steelers Wide Receiver Antonio Brown.

From the choices it was obvious that the new mechanics of Madden 16 would revolve around catching the ball, whether you’re on the offensive or defensive side of the ball.

Perhaps it’s a good thing that the final choice of cover athlete is taken away from the fans, as some of the past covers can attest to *cough* Peyton Hillis *cough*. Luckily, we won’t have to wait long to find out what Madden 17 will be all about.

Madden NFL 17 will be available for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on Aug. 23.

So who do you think deserves to be the cover athlete on Madden 17? What new mechanics do you hope makes it into this year’s edition? Sound off in the comments section below.
