Square Enix probably won’t be finished with Kingdom Hearts 3 development in time for a 2017 release date. Neither will the Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Tetsuya Nomura, director for both Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy VII Remake , confirmed during an interview with Famitsu (via Siliconera) what we already knew in our hearts: Kingdom Hearts 3 is nowhere near completion. We have our suspicions that it’s Disney holding up production, but the slow-moving development process could be due to any number of reasons.

“The production process is different than what we’ve had up until now, so I can’t just give you a general idea, but I can say that there are worlds that still remain untouched,” Nomura told Famitsu. “We’ve advanced on the production of worlds that have yet to be announced, so we can’t show them for now. As far as development status goes, there’s still a ways to go.”

Just for reference, Final Fantasy XV was announced in 2006, but the game wasn’t released until 2016. Kingdom Hearts 3 announced at E3 2013. At this rate, it’s looking like the game probably won’t be out until 2023.

Let that sink in…

In case you forgot, the Final Fantasy VII remake was announced at E3 2015. We wouldn’t be surprised if Square Enix released the remake before Kingdom Hearts 3, since they don’t have to deal with Disney to get licenses to use certain franchise characters. Still, it probably will be at least another four years before Final Fantasy VII fans get their long-awaited remake.

“We’re making steady progress on its production,” Nomura told Famitsu , referring to the development status of Final Fantasy VII remake. “While we are indeed working on it, I think we’ll have you guys wait a little longer for both Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy VII Remake . I do apologize for that, but we’ll make up for it by making it into something that will meet expectations.”

Nomura added, “We didn’t share much information on either of the two titles last year, but I hope to show its progress at some event this year. The release of these titles will still be a while. However, we have many titles releasing this year, and we hope you look forward to any ‘surprises’.”

Who knows when the games will come out? We’ll tell you one thing, so long as Marvel doesn’t invade the Kingdom Hearts 3 world, we’ll be fine waiting a few more years for the game. What do you think about Square Enix taking their time with the production of Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy VII Remake ? Let us know in the comments below.
