Last week, we learned Take-Two and Rockstar were shutting down OpenIV, effectively killing mods for GTA V. In a post on the Rockstar forums, the company announced Take-Two will reverse the decision to end all single-player mods, however OpenIV is still banned.

“Rockstar Games believes in reasonable fan creativity, and, in particular, wants creators to showcase their passion for our games. After discussions with Take-Two, Take-Two has agreed that it generally will not take legal action against third-party projects involving Rockstar’s PC games that are single-player, non-commercial, and respect the intellectual property (IP) rights of third parties,” the post reads. “This does not apply to (i) multiplayer or online services; (ii) tools, files, libraries, or functions that could be used to impact multiplayer or online services, or (iii) use or importation of other IP (including other Rockstar IP) in the project. This is not a license, and it does not constitute endorsement, approval, or authorization of any third-party project.”

The post ends by basically saying that at any time, any mod can still be shut down for whatever reason. “Take-Two reserves the right to object to any third-party project, or to revise, revoke and/or withdraw this statement at any time in their own discretion. This statement does not constitute a waiver of any rights that Take-Two may have with respect to third-party projects.”

With this new policy in place, single-player mods will be supported, so long as they have no way of interfering with GTA Online. Seeing as how Rockstar views OpenIV as a tool that can impact online play, that falls under the (ii) part of the message above. This means that mods are cool, so long as you don’t use the only tool around that allows you to use mods.

People are smart, and if there’s some way to get mods to work under these new guidelines, someone will have it figured out. The best place to stay up-to-date with the situation is following posts on gtaforums.com or the GTA V subreddit.

So what do you think? Are you still upset with Rockstar and Take-Two over this decision? Do you want Rockstar to allow gamers to mod GTA V as easily as other games? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
