George Lucas has released a statement about Carrie Fisher’s death. Fisher, 60, died on Dec. 27, leaving the Star Wars fandom devastated. George Lucas, who cast Fisher to play Princess Leia when she was 19-years-old, shared a sweet message in honor of his dear friend.

"Carrie and I have been friends most of our adult lives," Lucas said in a statement. "She was extremely smart; a talented actress, writer and comedienne with a very colorful personality that everyone loved. In Star Wars she was our great and powerful princess - feisty, wise and full of hope in a role that was more difficult than most people might think. My heart and prayers are with Billie, Debbie and all Carrie’s family, friends and fans. She will be missed by all."

Lucas isn’t the only one spreading kind words about Fisher. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy released a statement to Variety praising the way Fisher wasn’t afraid to speak up and break stereotypes.

“She was Princess Leia to the world but a very special friend to all of us,” she said. “She had an indomitable spirit, incredible wit, and a loving heart. Carrie also defined the female hero of our age over a generation ago. Her groundbreaking role as Princess Leia served as an inspiration of power and confidence for young girls everywhere.”

Let’s remember Fisher wasn’t just Princess Leia; she was General Organa, too. Fisher never censored herself and was unapologetic for anyone who found what she said to offensive. A great example of this was when Star Wars Episode 7 was announced and the internet trolls started saying Fisher hadn’t “aged gracefully.” She basically gave them a giant middle finger and said the following:

These are just a few words to describe Fisher: brave, fierce, strong, talented, smart, advocate, colorful, funny, iconic, witty, writer, groundbreaking, legend. Princess Leia didn’t define Fisher; Fisher defined herself.

R.I.P. Carrie Fisher, you’ll always be royalty to us.
