Gears of War 4 has been out for almost 10 months now, and unfortunately there hasn’t been any story advancement since the big reveals at the end of the game’s campaign. While there isn’t any story DLC planned for the future, Microsoft has teamed up with IDW Publishing to create a new series of comic books set in the Gears of War 4 world.

Details about the comics were scarce in the announcement on the official Gears of War website. So far, the only confirmations have been the author and release window. Kurtis Wiebe, best known for his Rat Queens comic, will be penning the new Gears comic, which is expected to release this January.

"I'm thrilled to be part of this new adaptation with IDW. With the release of Gears of War 4, fans experienced all the classic callbacks to the brutal, over-the-top action and tone they were used to but there was a new dynamic created with the younger generation of heroes in JD, Kait and Del,” Wiebe said in the announcement post. “That's the same experience I want for the comic readers. Something that feels familiar but fresh through new, as-of-yet unexplored regions and stories of the Gears of War universe."

It will be interesting to see what this comic will be about. While there were some major revelations about Kait and other characters at the end of Gears of War 4, it’s likely the key story events will be set aside for the games. After all, you don’t see huge reveals like who Rey’s parents are in a Star Wars comic. Something that big will be saved for the tentpole entries in the franchise.

Judging by the promotional artwork, the comic will take place during or after the events of Gears of War 4. This is because Marcus has joined back up with JD and Kait. However, Del is notably absent from the picture. That said, there is a disclaimer at the bottom of the picture saying that this is simply an “art style exploration” and the image is “not indicative of content.”

If you missed out on the previously-released Gears of War comic books, IDW Publishing will be re-releasing all of them in the coming months as well. No specific release details were given for the other comics.

So what do you think? Are you interested in exploring more of the world of Gears of War 4 though comics? Would you rather see Gears of War 5? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
