Love will be in the air in a future Valentine’s Day Fortnite update. Epic Games

Fortnite Battle Royale players won’t be able to buy cosmetics with real-world money for the game’s upcoming third season of content. Epic took to the game’s Twitter account to announcethe Season 3 pass can only be purchased with 950 in-game V-bucks. In other words, players won’t able to buy the whole set for $9.99.

“Season 3 Battle pass will be 950 V-bucks,” the tweet reads. “We will not be offering the Season 3 Battle Pass as a real-money purchase.”

Those who purchased Battle Passes in the past will have to explore new options. The easiest ways to earn V-bucks are claiming daily login rewards or completing Daily Challenges in Save The World. As long as you keep playing Battle Royale, you’ll still unlock Battle Pass tiers with a solid opportunity to eventually own the whole set. Players may also have a few extra bucks from buying or progressing through the Season 2 pass as well. This new model drives players toward purchasing the $39 Save The World Founders Pack, but also rewards the Battle Royale faithful who’ve who’ve bought previous passes.

Temporarily cutting microtransactions from Battle Royale cosmetics is an interesting move for Epic. In this case, not only does it foster goodwill for the legions of free players, but it also entices some of those folks to experience the full game to earn more bucks. What we don’t yet know is if this announcement means there will be new ways to earn V-bucks in Battle Royale. Lots of players have been asking for buck rewards from Challenges, so maybe something along those lines is being considered.

Fortnite Battle Royale Season 2 is expected to come to a close Feb. 20. After that date, a new batch of skins and other cosmetics will be available for players to unlock.

This indirect show of support to Save The World enthusiasts comes at a critical time. Despite already being delayed once before, Fortnite’s Valentine’s Day event has yet to begin. A quick glance at the game’s subreddit reveals some members of the community feel shunned at the expense of Battle Royale’s success. Community management staff has been silent all day regarding Epic’s Valentine’s Day plans, but still took the time to post this news for Royale fans. Maybe the thought of exclusive cosmetics will take some of that sting away.

We’ll likely learn more about the Season 3 Battle Pass in the coming days. We can’t wait to see what gliders and costumes will be available to unlock.

Fortnite is in early access across PS4, Xbox One and PC.
