Doomfist is ready to bring the pain
Doomfist is ready to bring the pain Blizzard

Overwatch has its latest playable character: Doomfist. The long-speculated puncher of walls is now live on the PTR, with a full release coming soon.

Doomfist is an offensive hero with six different abilities. Doomfist’s hand cannon is his basic attack, which looks like a shotgun blast coming from the gauntlet on his left hand. Ammo for the hand cannon auto-regenerates over time.

Doomfist also has a seismic slam, rising uppercut, rocket punch, meteor strike and a move called “The Best Defense...” Seismic slam is similar to Winston’s big jump, sending out a shockwave that forces nearby enemies closer to Doomfist. The rising uppercut is a melee move where Doomfist uppercuts an enemy standing in front of him. Using the rocket fist requires Doomfist to first charge up the attack, then he boosts forward, punching an enemy. If the enemy hits a wall after getting punched, additional damage is dealt. Meteor strike sends Doomfist up into the air, and he comes crashing down, dealing damage to all enemies in a small area. Lastly, The Best Defense is an ability that generates personal shields for Doomfist when he deals out ability damage to opponents.

The most interesting thing about Doomfist so far seems to be that his abilities are about booping players this way and that. They may be more defensive than they seem on the surface. Got a Soldier who just fired up his ult? Uppercut him and throw off his aim. Same with McCree for that matter. But despite his size and looming presence Doomfist only comes with 250 health, not exactly the tank people were expecting.

All of these moves can be seen in action on the official Overwatch website.

In terms of Overwatch lore, Doomfist, real name Akande Ogundimu, is a 45 year-old mercenary from Nigeria. He had spent his life training to be the best martial artist around, until he lost his right arm during the Omnic Crisis. This led him to get cybernetic implants, rendering him ineligible to compete in fighting tournaments. Talon took notice and scooped Ogundimu up, where he trained under the original Doomfist, Akinjide Adeyemi. Like any evil story about people getting stronger, Ogundimu killed Adeyemi, taking on the Doomfist moniker.

Doomfist was at first imprisoned by an Overwatch team consisting of Winston, Tracer and Genji, but used his massive punching prowess to literally knock the walls down around him.

Doomfist is currently available to play right now on the PTR, but that is only accessible to PC gamers. If you are on console, you’ll have to wait until Blizzard makes Doomfist available on all servers. If the timing for Doomfist is similar to when Sombra, Ana or Orisa was released, it shouldn’t take that long for everyone to be able to play.

So what do you think? Are you excited to play as Doomfist when he is fully released? What character do you think will be the next addition to Overwatch? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
