Guillermo del Toro is probably a bit jaded about working on video games after his nightmare of an experience with Konami.

Del Toro recently explained his involvement with Kojima Productions’ game, Death Stranding , to IGN. We saw del Toro in the second trailer for Hideo Kojima’s first official title since parting ways with Konami. Del Toro is excited to work on the game even if it’s just as a character.

“I’m involved as a character. Kojima-san called me and said, ‘I want you to be a character in the game,’ and I said, ‘Gladly.’ He’s discussed his ideas so I could understand the character, but other than that I’m not involved, creatively, at all,” del Toro told IGN. “This is entirely Kojima-san’s game. I think it’s gonna be a fantastic game, 100%. But this is him and his ideas. I’m just a puppet in his hands. My contribution is limited to being a cheerleader for his ideas and being scanned for long hours at a time. That’s about it.”

Del Toro is enjoying being a part of Kojima’s creative process for Death Stranding . More specifically, del Toro is impressed with the process of performing motion capture for the game. He told IGN it took several hours for the team to just scan his image and create a model of himself for the game. Del Toro likes that Kojima is turning him into a “real character” for Death Stranding.

Little is known about Death Stranding , but Kojima spoke briefly about the game’s meaning during an interview with Glixel. Apparently, “Stranding” is a symbol for connections that tie into the game. In the teaser you can see Mads Mikkelsen’s character manipulate these weird skeleton corpse throw strings.

"One thing people were pointing out after the first teaser was released, was how the cover of the album 0 has string-like objects that seem to be hanging from top to bottom," Kojima told Glixel. "They say these are the same mysterious strings as in the teaser. In Death Stranding , ‘strand’ stands for strings and connections, and I felt a mysterious connection to that song that I found in that CD shop in Reykjavík two years ago."

We’ll just go along with whatever Kojima says. Can we just have more Norman Reedus in the next trailer? We ask for so little. Death Stranding is currently in development for the PlayStation 4.
