Blackstar, the last album released by David Bowie, has a secret message hidden physically on the vinyl record. In the sunlight, a hidden starfield appears on the sleeve, twinkling through the giant star-shape cutout on the record’s black exterior case.

Some internet commenters have taken to understanding the hidden message as a metaphor for Bowie’s ascension to the very starscapes he aspired to musically. In normal light, the stars fade from view and leave the brown-gray sleeve.

Consisting of seven songs, Blackstar was released shortly before the artist’s death, which happened to be only two days after Bowie’s 69th birthday. The music video for ‘Lazarus,’ the single on the album, featured Bowie blindfolded and writhing on a hospital bed.

Bowie passed away after 18 months of unknown cancer, although the NY Daily News reports that a friend of Bowie’s said it was liver cancer.

A tribute concert to David Bowie recently took place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, with artists such as Mumford & Sons, Blondie, The Pixies, The Flaming Lips, The Polyphonic Spree, Jakob Dylan and Cat Power performing.
