Cyberpunk 2077 may be coming out later than you would like CD Projekt RED

The release of Cyberpunk 2077 feels as far off as 2077 itself, with developer CD Projekt Red being very vocal about their long-term, measured approach to creating the game. There have not been many official announcements about Cyberpunk 2077 either, so most of what we know is that the game is slated for release between 2017-2021, according to an official CDPR memo. That’s quite a wide spread and, unless they’re being exceptionally cheeky about it, we shouldn’t expect a Cyberpunk 2077 release date this year at least. So, when will Cyberpunk 2077 launch in that four-year window?

A set of financial documents recently made available by CDPR hint at a 2019 release date. The set of four documents all pertain to some sort of grant funding from the Polish government and EU for these projects: seamless multiplayer, cinematic feel, animation excellence and city creation. PDFs of the requests are available for you to peruse, but the takeaway is that an explicit deadline of June 2019 applies to the projects. CDPR needs to have completed the projects by that time, although it has an option to file an extension if needed. Included in the filing are more than 50 job descriptions for positions related to these projects, although it’s unclear if CDPR is hiring for those positions or if they awarded money will be used to pay workers already employed by CDPR in other capacities. And it’s safe to assume these requests are for the development of Cyberpunk 2077 as the link to the official site is listed alongside the PDFs.

iDigitalTimes first reported on these proposals back in September, when another filing procedure became publicly available. It’s clear from the descriptions that Cyberpunk 2077 is shaping up to be an ambitious project, with particular attention being paid to “Seamless Multiplayer.” CDPR has never done a large-scale multiplayer project before, so there is a lot of work ahead for the studio, although anyone familiar with CDPR’s work knows the team is up to the task. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt should be counted among the best RPGs of all time, and its post-launch strategy is a model for the industry.

So what can we expect on the Cyberpunk 2077 release date? Based on what we’ve seen thus fa,r we’ll be in a living, AI-driven city that other players can drop in and out of. It will be a graphical wonderland on par with The Witcher 3 on consoles, with 4k capability for the beefier Scorpio and Pro owners and a PC version that will probably be as breathtaking as it is demanding.
