Cuphead Release Date, Short Teaser Included In Microsoft's E3 Briefing

A launch date for Cuphead has finally been given to the public, seven years after work first began on the old-timey platformer, and we’re only a few months away from seeing the game slide onto PC and Xbox One. We even got a to see a bit of new Cuphead gameplay with the reveal, albeit considerably less footage than accompanied most of the games shown during Microsoft’s annual E3 briefing.

Of course, most of us have already seen Cuphead and fallen in love with the project’s 1930s cartoon aesthetic, so we didn’t necessarily need to be sold on the game again this weekend. But that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t have happily watched a brief new gameplay trailer. The game is visually stunning, combining many of the retro game mechanics we know and love with an even older aesthetic that is probably a bit foreign to the youngest gamers on Xbox Live. But it’s hard to be upset about the lack of gameplay now that we know the Cuphead launch date is only a few months away. The game won’t be ready until late September; however, it sounds like 2017 will be the year when the public finally gets its hands on StudioMDHR’s platformer.

There weren’t any other announcements related to the project and Microsoft didn’t devote significant stage time to the game. We still don’t know how long Cuphead will take to complete, how many bosses we can expect to encounter or even if the game will hit PC and Xbox One on the same date. And there weren’t any guest character announcements or reveals. All we know is Cuphead will finally be available (to some portion of its audience) at the end of September.

For an early look at Cuphead, take a few minutes to check out the release date teaser that debuted over the weekend and/or revisit some of the Cuphead gameplay trailers from previous shows. Then head down to the comments section and let us know if you’re planning to check out Cuphead when the game heads to Xbox Live and Windows 10 later this year.

Cuphead is in development for PC and Xbox One. The game debuts Sept. 29.
