‘Constantine’ Season 2 Rumors: Matt Ryan’s Constantine Headed To ‘Arrow’ Or ‘Legends Of Tomorrow’?

Speculation about what’s in store for Constantine Season 2 came to an end when NBC declined to renew the series four months after the Season 1 finale. Aside from the poor ratings, the show was well received, particularly Matt Ryan’s portrayal of the titular character which lead to a juicy 72 percent ripe score on Rotten Tomatoes . Fans demanded answers, and of course, more of Matt Ryan’s Constantine. Now, we may just have both. Now that full episodes of Constantine Season 1 are free to stream on CW Seed, there is a glimmer of hope John C. could carve his own spot in the Arrowverse with a role in Arrow Season 5, DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 2, or perhaps even both.

The character made his way to Arrow Season 4 shortly after Stephen Amell revealed there were talks of the Green Arrow making his way over to NBC. Arrow fans fell in love with Constantine’s performance when he came to Star City to help Oliver restore Sara’s soul after she was brought back to life in the Lazarus Pit. Constantine’s name has been mentioned as recently as recent as “Genesis”, where Oliver called him for advice about fending off Damien Darhk’s magic. Constantine directed Ollie to his friend Esrin Fortuna, who taught Ollie how to channel magic through light and hope. In “Taken,” Oliver tells Diggle Constantine is in Hell, an interdimensional underworld where he likely went to save Astra Logue, a girl who he accidentally sent there in a failed exorcism attempt. He presumably found a way out since Oliver was able to contact him for help five episodes later.

Greg Berlanti & Co. have certainly expressed interest in getting Constantine in the Arrowverse full time. Last year before Constantine’s cameo on Arrow , Showrunners Wendy Mericle and Marc Guggenheim told various news outlets, including Variety , they’d love to host Constantine. Guggenheim said he thought the Arrowverse was already fit for his official introduction, but warns there would be one tough creative decision if he comes aboard.

“A lot of the pieces are in place, except for that one final piece, which is: what’s the fate of Constantine ? That’s the tricky thing,” Guggenheim said.

The CW was even able to acquire Constantine’s original getup since the series shared a studio, and Constantine’s introduction to Oliver was just about as organic as it can get. "Each year on the show, we have added and expanded the mythology with different elements. In Season 2 we introduced the idea of superpowers, last year brought in the League of Assassins, and for Season 4, we always had a plan to introduce magic and mysticism," Guggenheim told TV Insider . "We were already swimming in those waters and that's why Constantine is this great organic little development."

However, now that Arrow Season 5 is going back to the superpower-less tone of its first two seasons, Legends of Tomorrow may be a better fit for John Constantine’s skills. If Constantine comes to the CW, either for Season 2 (probably not) or for a regular role, his presence likely won’t be nearly as creepy, or bloody, as NBC’s take on the character, which is definitely why live ratings suffered with NBC’s older audience.

Like Supergirl’s first season on CBS, Constantine hailed from Warner Bros. even though it was on NBC. CW has clearly tinkered with the licensing rights now that it’s available on CW Seed, which is a good sign moving forward. Now that Vixen, who made her debut on the CW Seed series of the same name, has a recurring role on Team Legends, Constantine’s new spot on CW Seed could be a hint at what’s to come. Since DC’s Legends of Tomorrow introduced Justice Society of America in the season finale, fans are speculating we may see Spectre, or even Doctor Fate, hop aboard the Waverider. Constantine is a member of Justice League Dark-- a specialized team that tackles threats unfit for the Justice League -- which showrunner David Goyer revealed would be explored Constantine Season 2.

The CW rescued Supergirl. Do you think the network will do the same for John Constantine, or at least give him a role in another series? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
