The Civilization 6 team has shared gameplay details for Greece, led by the legendary statesman and general Pericles. Check out the video below for more details on Greece in Civ 6:

Pericles’ leader ability is called “Surrounded By Glory.” For every city-state for which Greece is the Suzerain, Greece gets a bonus to their Culture.

“[Pericles] oversaw a period of strong economic and cultural growth immediately following the successful defense against the invading Persian army in 478 BC… [W]hat was a loose collection of independent Greek city-states soon after became the Athenian Empire. During this time of unification, Athens produced some of the most influential cultural artifacts humanity has ever seen, and was home to famous playwrights, historians, philosophers, physicians and more,” says Civ ’s official site.

Greece’s unique ability is Plato’s Republic. The Greeks get an extra wildcard slot, no matter which government they use.

The Greek unique unit is the Hoplite, which gets a bonus when other Hoplites are adjacent.

“These citizen-soldiers of ancient Greek city-states were outfitted in bronze armor and carried a long spear and short, round shield. Hoplites received basic military training and primarily fought in the phalanx formation, a combat technique pioneered by Greece’s generals between 750 and 350 BC,” says the Civ 6 team.

The Unique District for the Greeks is the Acropolis, which replaces the Theater District. The Acropolis gets higher culture adjacency bonuses for being next to districts, especially the city center. It must be built on a hill.

By allying with city-states, placing the acropolis well and using the bonus wildcard civic, Greece is flexible enough to pursue any victory type from the start (though it’s of course well-oriented for a Culture win). The Hoplite is strong against early aggressive Civs like Scythia or the Aztecs, allowing you to protect your burgeoning Civilization as its accomplishments begin to accrue the envy of your neighbors.

If you need more Civilization VI info, we have the gameplay details for Spain, Scythia, Japan, Egypt and the United States of America, along with their new leaders’ unique bonuses. We also know about Norway, China, England, France, Germany, India, Egypt and the Kongo. There’s even a major pre-order bonus: the Aztecs, led by Montezuma I.
