Captain Cold Alive? His 'Legends Of Tomorrow' Return Explained

Tonight’s Legends of Tomorrow episode, “Fellowship of the Spear,” will bring Captain Cold back to the Arrowverse, but Wentworth Miller won't be playing the same man we remember. He’s coming back as a villain and a member of The Legion of Doom, a group of baddies from The Flash and Arrow on the cusp of using the Spear of Destiny to change the present and future. The Legends will return to the vanishing point, where they last saw Captain Cold sacrifice himself for the team to destroy the oculus, a device used by the Time Masters to manipulate and predict the timeline.

Considering Captain Cold is one a fan-favorite Flash villain and one of the most exciting actors to watch on The CW, it’s no surprise he’s back alive. So in the spirit of Wentworth Miller’s second resurrection of the year (his character, Michael, is back alive on Prison Break), here’s five things we know about his return to Legends.

How Is Captain Cold Alive?

All leads point to Reverse-Flash. Like he did with Damien Darhk and Malcolm Merlyn, Eobard Thawne goes back to Central City around 2014 to recruit Snart and lure him into the group with information of his future death. To prevent their dismal futures, the Legion of Doom sets out to find the spear of destiny.

“My sense is that if Snart comes back into the storyline via his present day incarnation, then he’s a straight-up villain. He hasn’t gone on that first season Legends of Tomorrow journey yet, so when we meet him again — quote unquote alive in 2017 — I imagine that he’s going to be much like when we first met him the first season on The Flash, which I’m looking forward to, because it means I get to arc to a completely different place,” Miller teased at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour.

He's A ‘Straight Up’ Villain

In The Flash, Barry always had a soft spot for Snart, even though he was one his most formidable adversaries. Captain Cold’s goal was never to kill people; he really was just a thief willing to do whatever it took to get the money. Flash let Captain Cold walk on numerous occasions (well, Snart may have outsmarted him a few times). He developed more heroic qualities on Legends , bringing out the softer side of him Barry Allen encouraged him to find. However, all that positive progress will be lost when he joins Legion of Doom. Captain Cold’s return and partnership with DCTV’s biggest bads -- Malcolm Merlyn, Reverse-Flash, and Damien Darhk -- means he’s more brutal than ever before.

“He returns as a part of the Legion, so he automatically, in her eyes, is a baddie. But she cares a lot about Rory, so seeing how that affects Rory [is difficult]. He’s just a baddie to her, and that means one thing: that they have to eliminate him,” Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim told Entertainment Weekly.

No White Canary Romance

One of the best arcs in Legends of Tomorrow Season 1 was Sara and Snart’s close relationship. Fans didn’t see it coming, but Caity Lotz (who plays White Canary) and Miller shared a fireworks-worthy near-death kiss in the season finale. Unfortunately, Miller has already said his character does not remember that kiss and Lotz revealed the romance won’t be addressed.

“It’s a bummer,” Lotz tells Entertainment Weekly . “I really wanted to, but hopefully they’re saving it for another time. The focus of Snart is his relationship with Rory, the original bromance, and I was really bummed, actually, because I wanted to, in the alternative reality [Doomsworld], for Sara and Snart to be dating like a little Bonnie and Clyde. But the Rory-Snart relationship is really important, and they had a lot of story left to do with that, so we don’t get to see any of that in this one, but hopefully later; hopefully we’re saving it for later.”

Tension With The Legion

There’s some big personalities on the Legion and only recently did the three villains get on the same terms. Eobard Thawne came clean about why he needs the spear. When Black Flash appears while hunting Reverse-Flash, Malcolm Merlyn and Damien Darhk refuse to help him unless he fesses up and stops ordering them around. However, it looks like the Legion may have leadership problems again when the snatch up Captain Cold.

“He’s not a team player. That was certainly his story the first season on Legends, so I expect fireworks,” Miller recently teased.

Heat Wave -- Hero Or Not?

After reuniting with his long-lost partner in crime, Heat Wave may be tempted to join the dark side. Only a few episodes back, he was having hallucinations of Snart taunting him about becoming a hero.

Dominic Purcell recently said Mick may think twice about his place on the Waverider. “I don’t think Mick is a good guy,” Purcell says, “and there’s a lot of history there. Mick loves Cold.”
