Jeremy Irons plays a Templar scientist in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie, which has a lot of video game lovers a bit nervous.

Video game movie adaptations haven’t done so well in the past. The main issue is video game lore takes a while to build in a game. Assassin’s Creed is deeply intertwined with history and a mythology that involves deities and mythical artifacts. It’s a very complex world, but Irons is confident in the film adaption.

Iron recently shared with IGN how director Justin Kurzel managed to bring the Assassin's Creed world to life on the big screen.

“The photography on it was great, the story was very strong and fascinating to an adult as well as to a child,” Irons told IGN. “I thought the period stuff was quite brilliant and the action sequences, I thought, because Justin didn't want to have to rely on CGI, that he wanted real sometime elliptic performers during those sequences so that they are actually running across those roofs. They are actually climbing those walls. I think that gave it a level of seriousness and suspense that many films that rely on CGI don't have. We were really invested in the characters and I also love the very enigmatic relationships between both Michael and Marion and me and Marion and me and Michael. I felt they were deep complicated relationships that were not easily colored in black and white.”

Still, fans of the Assassin’s Creed franchise will have to wait and see if the film does break the bad video game movie streak. Another video game movie adaptation that came out this year was Warcraft , based on the lore and mythology of World of Warcraft . The film didn’t fair so well with critics, receiving a 28 percent fresh rating from Rotten Tomatoes, but 78 percent of audiences enjoyed the film.

Just keep an open mind when watching the Assassin's Creed movie. Assassin’s Creed starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons hits theaters Dec. 21.
