New Absolver Trailer Outlines Cooperative And Competitive Multiplayer

Absolver
Absolver Devolver / Sloclap

A new trailer for Absolver hit the web on Thursday, featuring new information on the competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes we’ll see in Sloclap’s “online melee action” game when it hits PC and PlayStation 4. And it sounds like the studio has big plans for its Absolver, both at launch and in the months following the game’s debut.

It’s nice to see Devolver Digital and Sloclap offer something more substantial than the uninformative trailers we’ve come to expect for new games. The two studios weren’t able to lean on the same handful of cutscenes that tend to provide the backbone for other game trailers, since Absolver won’t have a traditional story mode. But solo content also wasn’t the focus this week. Seven days after giving fans an inside look at Absolver ’s character customization content, Sloclap is providing new information on the multiplayer content included at launch. We also get a sneak peek at what’s coming to Absolver after the game is out.

Absolver won’t have a traditional story mode but the game does still have a campaign (of sorts), with encounters that some players will struggle to complete on their own. But the good news is Absolver will let you call for backup. The trailer is a bit light on details, but does confirm teams of up to three can work together in Absolver. Teams can also train together, making it easier to chat with friends while taking full advantage of one of the game’s teaching modes. There’s even a Student-Mentor system, comprised entirely of Absolver players, which gives less-experienced fighters a means of expanding their repertoire while they continue to train their prospect. Sloclap says other rewards will be available, but we’ll have to wait until launch day to learn more.

The game’s competitive offerings will be relatively meager at first. The studio says Absolver will support one on one fights with a standard ruleset -- the first fighter knocked down three times loses the match -- and no rankings. But ranked matchmaking, tournament play and three-on-three team battles are all coming after launch.

For an early look at Absolver, take a few minutes to watch the “Friends & Foes” trailer that debuted on Thursday (embedded up top). Then hit the comments and let us know if you’re planning to check out Absolver when the game debuts in a few weeks.

Absolver is in development for PlayStation 4 and PC. The game debuts Aug. 29.
